CHANDIGARH, August 26: Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring today criticized Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann for leaving the state, literally to its own destiny, and flying off deep south to Chennai in Tamil Nadu to be present at the launching of a breakfast scheme for school children there.
Reacting to the CM’s Tamil Nadu visit today,
Warring said, given the state of emergency caused in Punjab due to unprecedented floods, it is essential for the Chief Minister to remain in the state. The Chief Minister should personally monitor the situation. “Unfortunately, the Chief Minister decided to go to Tamil Nadu. He was there for the launch of a breakfast scheme for school children,” he said. Warring observed, “the Punjab CM should have cancelled all engagements. He should have focused on flood control and relief measures in his own state.”
leaving : “Floods have started causing unimaginable devastation across Punjab
He said, otherwise the AAP government has completely failed the people of Punjab as no preparations were made in anticipation of heavy rains. “Floods have started causing unimaginable devastation across Punjab. This is particularly true in the areas around the banks of Sutlej and Beas”, he said. He noted, “while this is certainly not the time for politics, that does not mean the government and the administration it runs, is not held accountable”.
“W had warned the government well in advance. Advance flood preparation is the standard norm of any government. The AAP government failed even in the standard practice”, he said. While remarking, as in everything else, this government has failed the Punjabis in helping them to prevent the massive losses which were caused by the floods.
Last, but not the least, he pointed out, there was already a prediction of “more than normal” monsoon rains. He said that the government and the bureaucracy failed to take note. They have literally been caught unawares. He hoped, “at least now, the government wakes up from the slumber and takes relief measures”.
He hoped that Chief Minister Mann will cut short his visit to Tamil Nadu and return home to Punjab.
