Vigilance Registers Corruption Case Involving Doctor and Others

Arrests class-IV employee for receiving bribe

Chandigarh January 23 – During its ongoing campaign against corruption in the state, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has registered a corruption case against five accused, including a doctor and his assistant, for accepting bribes in exchange for issuing a false medico-legal report (MLR). The VB has arrested an employee of Civil Hospital Ferozepur in connection with this case.

A spokesperson of the state VB revealed that they have booked five accused under section 7, 7-A of the Prevention of Corruption Act and sections 193, 465, 466, 471, and 120-B of the IPC.

The accused comprise Dr. Shashi Bhushan, posted at Civil Hospital Ferozepur, his assistant Ram Prasad alias Chotu, a class-IV employee at the hospital, and three private individuals: Rekha, her father Shammi, and mother Asha, all residents of Khateek Mandi, Ferozepur Cantonment.

During the investigation of a complaint, it came to light that the complainant, Tarsem, had a dispute with his wife Rekha, resulting in his in-laws breaking his right hand and left leg bones on 09.07.2020. Subsequently, a case was registered against Rekha, Asha, Shammi, and Sonu at the Ferozepur city police station.

Tarsem informed the VB that on 24.02.2021, he discovered through a mobile phone application that his wife Rekha and her family were bribing Ram Prasad alias Chhotu, a class-4 employee, to be given to Dr. Shashi Bhushan in exchange for issuing a false MLR to file a forged case against him. Chhotu acted as a middleman in negotiating and passing the bribe to the accused doctor.

The spokesperson added that based on the false MLR, a police case was registered against Tarsem and his father Rafiq. However, during the probe, it was found that the MLR was false according to records obtained from Civil Hospital Ferozepur. The complainant submitted a CD to the VB as evidence against the family members of his in-laws, Ram Prasad, and Dr. Shashi Bhushan, establishing the issuance of a fake medical certificate in exchange for a bribe.

Following the investigation by VB range Ferozepur, they have registered a case against all the accused, and an employee, Ram Prasad, has been arrested. The VB is actively pursuing the arrest of the remaining accused, and further investigation is underway.
