VB nabs ESI clerk for taking Rs 15,000 bribe to clear bills

Chandigarh February 28 – The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) apprehended Ravinder Singh, Clerk at ESI Dispensary Dhandari Kalan, Ludhiana, during its ongoing anti-corruption campaign in the state. Singh was caught demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000.

 Arrest and Complaint Details

The state VB announced that it arrested Singh based on a complaint filed by Rajwant Singh, a resident of village Chankoian, Ludhiana district, according to an official spokesperson. Rajwant Singh, who works as a peon at Guru Harkrishan Public School, Doraha, reported that he had pending medical bills of Rs 4,78,136 at DMC Hospital Ludhiana, covered under the ESI scheme.

 Allegations and Bribery Scheme

Rajwant Singh alleged that Ravinder Singh demanded a bribe of Rs 30,000 to clear his medical bills. The clerk suggested splitting the bribe into two installments: Rs 20,000 upfront and the remaining Rs 10,000 later. Additionally, Ravinder Singh informed the complainant that a share of the bribe had to be given to a concerned officer in Chandigarh. Rajwant Singh recorded his conversations with the accused on his phone.

 Arrest and Legal Action

Following a preliminary investigation, the VB range Ludhiana laid a trap and arrested Ravinder Singh while he accepted Rs 15,000 as the first installment of the bribe. The arrest occurred in the presence of two official witnesses. The police station VB range Ludhiana has registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Court Proceedings and Further Investigation

The spokesperson announced that they would produce the accused in the competent court tomorrow.. Furthermore, investigators will probe the roles of other officials implicated during the investigation.
