CHANDIGARH, February 12 : The Special Investigation Team(SIT) was formed by the Punjab Police. It continues its crackdown on fraudulent immigration consultants. These consultants exploit innocent individuals. They have registered two more first information reports (FIRs) against travel agents. The latest FIRs targeted agents. These agents allegedly deceived victims with false promises of facilitating illegal entry into the United States. This deception resulted in the victims’ deportation.
The latest FIR details include FIR No. 4, dated 11/2/2025. It was registered against Jaskaran Singh, Mahinder Singh, Hardev Kaur, and Sujan Singh. They are all residents of Tahli in Tanda, District Hoshiarpur. Police registered FIR No. 5 on 11/2/2025 against Agent Happy of Tanda in Hoshiarpur and Agent Gill of Tarn Taran. The registration was under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Emigration Act at Police Station NRI Hoshiarpur.
Travel Agents ; Punjab SIT Cracks Down on Fraudulent Travel Agents Exploiting Deportees
The SIT is led by ADGP NRI Affairs Praveen Sinha. It has been investigating complaints from deportees. Travel agents defrauded these individuals with false promises of illegal entry into the US.
The team has recorded statements of deportees and registered FIRs against fraudulent travel agents.
Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav reaffirmed Punjab Police’s commitment. They are determined to act against the chain of fraudulent immigration networks. Their goal is to end the exploitation of vulnerable individuals.

He also urged all citizens to come forward with any information that could help in arresting these culprits. Public cooperation is essential to dismantle these fraudulent networks. He said people should also raise awareness among themselves. This will help prevent others from falling prey to fraudulent immigration consultants.
ADGP NRI Affairs Praveen Sinha said that the NRI Affairs Wing and the district police are working closely together. They aim to ensure quick and strong action against those named in the FIRs. He said they would examine all forward and backward linkages to cripple and demolish the whole network.
The Punjab Police strongly advises individuals to take only the legal route for immigration services. They should opt only for licensed agents. It’s important to verify agents’ credentials before making any commitments.
In late 2024, Punjab Police’s NRI Affairs Wing and Cyber Crime Wing took significant action. They coordinated with the Protectorate of Emigrants, Chandigarh. Together, they booked 43 travel agencies. These agencies were illegally advertising jobs abroad on social media without the requisite licenses.
