Jouramajra Unveils STP Water Irrigation Projects

Says, Punjab first state to start utilisation of treated water for irrigation in an organised manner

Chandigarh/Ferozepur, February 20:  Punjab Water Resources and Soil & Water Conservation Minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra, on Tuesday, inaugurated two treated water-based irrigation projects from Sewerage Treatment Plants of Talwandi Bhai and Zira of 4 and 8 MLD capacity, respectively. Both the projects will provide irrigation water to 556 hectares of about 360 farmer households.

Government’s Commitment to Farming Community

Chetan Singh Jouramajra stresses the government’s commitment to supporting farmers, particularly in providing irrigation water. He reiterated Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s dedication to assisting the farming community. Since the government’s formation two years ago, promoting surface water-based irrigation has been a priority, with over 14,000 field channels restored to supply canal water to agricultural fields. Utilizing treated water for irrigation maximizes surface water use, preventing wastage and redirecting it for agricultural purposes.

Expansion of Treated Water Use

The cabinet minister stated that the state has commissioned 60 treated water irrigation projects from as many STPs, utilizing 340 MLD treated water. These projects have benefited approximately 11,000 hectares of agricultural land.The government’s keen focus on the program will scale up treated water usage to 600 MLD by the next crop season, benefiting more than 25,000 hectares of agricultural land.
