CEO Directs Election Officials for Fairness and Candidate Security

URGES FARMERS UNIONS TO REFRAIN FROM DISRUPTING THE CAMPAIGNS OF CONTESTING CANDIDATES IN PUNJAB

Chandigarh, May 9: “In light of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sibin C issued instructions on Thursday to all Deputy Commissioners-cum-District Election Officers, Commissioners of Police, and Senior Superintendents of Police. Their mandate: to guarantee a level playing field for all candidates and ensure their security.”

The CEO stressed that ensuring the security of candidates is one of the primary responsibilities of the district election machinery and the Election Commission of India is serious about this matter.

CEO Circulates Notice on Campaigning Concerns

In a circular issued to the officers, the CEO stated that he had noticed numerous incidents reported from various parts of the state. These incidents, highlighted through various complaints and reports in the media, involved agitating farmers obstructing political party candidates, thereby impeding the candidates’ democratic right to campaign and convey their manifesto to the citizens of the state. Such actions go against the directions and guidelines of the ECI.

Protesting farmers frequently hold gatherings without permissions

“The CEO stressed that protesting farmers frequently organize unauthorized gatherings, disregarding District Magistrates’ orders under Sec 144 CRPC, and use unauthorized loudspeakers. Additionally, he highlighted the importance, as outlined by the ECI, of ensuring candidate security and adherence to guidelines for fair campaigning, essential for maintaining a level playing field for all candidates.”

Punjab CEO Stresses Election Guidelines Compliance

“Sibin C reiterated that all district election machinery must follow these guidelines and ensure their implementation in the field. He emphasised that people should not take the law into their hands.”

The CEO directed all officers to implement these directions diligently and thoroughly. Any noticed incidents will be taken seriously and promptly reported to the ECI.

Meanwhile, a delegation of farmers met with the Punjab CEO at his office. During the meeting, the CEO urged farmers’ unions to maintain law and order, and refrain from disrupting campaigns of contesting candidates statewide.
