Chandigarh, August 3

Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan has strongly condemned the Union Government’s decision to prevent speakers from non-BJP ruled states, including Punjab, from participating in the National Legislature Conference being held in America.

Terming the move as unfortunate and accusing the BJP of playing petty politics in every case, Mr. Sandhwan said that it is extremely dangerous for the federal structure of the nation apart from creating hindrances in welfare and progress of states and the country. He emphasized that the conference was an opportunity for over 3,000 legislators to come together and share their vision but the Union Government’s move has deprived the Speakers of non-BJP ruled states to get the chance.

The Speaker apprised that the speakers from Punjab, Himachal, Karnataka and Kerala were not given allowed to go to America. He said that the Speakers of non-BJP ruled states have been barred from going to America. He said that the country can be empowered only through the fair political practices. He said that the Union Government is doing these things deliberately as BJP does not want to strengthen the Federal fabric of the nation. He advised that only politics with a sense of service could strengthen the nation. He said that the Speaker represents the dignity and the freedom of the House but the BJP is following its own divisive agenda, which is not favourable for country at all.

  1. Sandhwan further stated that Punjab Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann has been not allowed to travel to Paris. He expressed anger, saying that repeated roadblocks are being imposed without reasonable justification. Sandhwan criticized the central government for failing to support sports development in Punjab, while allegedly offering incentives to other states. He emphasized the need for a fair sports policy, acknowledging the capabilities of athletes from all states.

  1. Sandhwan highlighted Punjab’s significant contribution to India’s national sport, hockey, citing the team’s historic win against Australia after 52 years. He revealed that the Chief Minister’s request to attend the event in Paris and boost the team’s morale was denied, suggesting that the BJP is attempting to rectify its oversight in allocating sufficient sports funding to Punjab. Sandhwan perceived this as a deliberate attempt to discriminate against and oppress the state of Punjab.
