
PROVIDING REHABILITATION OPPORTUNITIES TO LIFE-SENTENCE PRISONERS SHOWING GOOD CONDUCT: LALJIT SINGH BHULLAR
Chandigarh, August 7: Taking a compassionate initiative, the Punjab Government has granted early release to 108 prisoners. These prisoners were serving life sentences and demonstrated exemplary conduct during their incarceration over the past year. This measure aims to provide rehabilitation opportunities to inmates with good conduct. Laljit Singh Bhullar, Minister of Jails, Punjab, informed about this initiative.
Punjab Releases 108 Life-Term Prisoners Showing Reform for Reintegration
Divulging further, the Cabinet Minister said, “Over the past year, 108 of these prisoners were serving life sentences. These sentences were in various Punjab jails. They have been released.” He stressed that this decision demonstrates the state government’s efforts. They aim to provide a second chance to individuals exhibiting good behaviour. These individuals have also met the requisite criteria for early release.
Bhullar said that this initiative will provide these individuals with an opportunity for rehabilitation and reintegration into mainstream society. He said that this step is part of the Punjab Government’s comprehensive strategy. The strategy ensures that the justice system not only punishes but also facilitates the reestablishment. It also supports the reintegration of individuals into society.
The Cabinet Minister elaborated that the government aims to promote a more humane approach to justice. We achieve this by releasing prisoners who have shown a desire for reform. The strategy seeks to be more effective.
“The release of these prisoners is evidence of our government’s commitment to rehabilitation. It provides individuals with opportunities to reconnect with society,” he remarked. He also stated that “We believe in second chances. We are actively working to create a more compassionate and just society.
The Cabinet Minister further said that the authorities have installed around 800 calling systems in jails to facilitate communication between prisoners and their families and lawyers, thereby preventing the use of illegal mobile phones. Indigent prisoners are also provided with free calling services, allowing them 10 minutes of calls every 15 days to communicate with their families and lawyers, he added.
