
4407 SEWERMEN ROUND-THE-CLOCK RESTORING SEWERAGE NETWORKS: DR. RAVJOT SINGH
Chandigarh, September 21: In an effort to rehabilitate sewer networks, 4407 sewermen are working tirelessly. They are part of Punjab flood relief efforts. An outline of the relief actions being taken is provided here.
Punjab Local Government Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh today shared important news. He informed that the department has mounted a wide-ranging flood relief campaign. It focuses on restoration across the affected towns and villages. He said the department has started targeted actions. This ensures speed and efficiency in recovery efforts. These actions are in addition to general measures like debris clearance, carcass disposal, sewer cleaning, and repair of public assets.
Dr. Ravjot Singh stated that the department has assigned a specific jurisdiction to each officer under the “Area Responsibility Plan”. The authorities direct the officers to assess damages to houses, shops, roads, and infrastructure.
This change makes the sentence more active and engaging by clearly stating who is performing the action. The department has already initiated immediate steps for repair and restoration and is processing tenders on a war footing to enable early execution.
Punjab Flood Relief: Public Health and Sewerage Restoration Efforts
The Cabinet Minister highlighted measures for public health and safety. He mentioned that municipal teams are systematically taking stray animals into custody. The Health Department is assisting with anti-rabies injections for stray dogs. They are also organizing vaccination drives for cattle and other animals in all affected areas.until conditions return to normal. .make into active voice
The authorities have identified special shelters to house stray cattle and animals until conditions return to normal.These steps are crucial to control stray animal movement, prevent infections and ensure humane care, he added.
Giving details of sanitation restoration, Dr. Ravjot Singh said that the Government has placed sewerage restoration at the centre of its relief operations. A total of 4,407 sewermen have been deployed round the clock. They are working across flood-affected Urban Local Bodies. Their aim is to clear clogged sewers and prevent health hazards. The authorities have mapped sewer networks to identify clogged and damaged areas and are using a combination of modern machinery and manual labor for de-silting. They are prioritizing critical institutions like hospitals, schools, and marketplaces.
He further pointed out that the safety and well-being of sewermen remains a top concern with protective gear, mechanized tools and medical support being provided to those working in hazardous conditions. Along with immediate clearance, repair of damaged sewer lines, manholes and pumping stations is underway to restore long-term functionality of the system.
Punjab’s Holistic Approach to Relief and Recovery”
The Cabinet Minister also emphasized that the relief campaign extends beyond sewerage alone. Restoration of damaged houses and shops under PMAY–Urban 2.0 has begun for eligible beneficiaries.The authorities are extending financial assistance to street vendors through a special campaign. This campaign runs from September 17 to October 2. It offers loans of Rs.10,000 with a total credit facility of up to Rs.80,000 under guarantee coverage.
The authorities are removing debris and disposing of carcasses scientifically to restore hygiene. They have deployed 543 fogging machines for large-scale operations.These operations aim to curb vector-borne diseases, he added.
Dr. Ravjot Singh categorically said that the authorities compile daily monitoring reports.Municipal engineers supervise the process to ensure effective outcomes. He said that the entire operation is being closely monitored at both district and state levels. Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and Executive Officers are directly supervising progress while a centralized monitoring cell is tracking daily reports from ULBs to ensure transparency. Ward-level committees and community volunteers are also extending vital support in identifying blocked points and assisting in ground-level execution
