Prof. BC Verma known as guardian of unprivileged students
Known for his soft-spoken, erudite and benevolent personality, many students of Prof Verma rose to distinguished positions

Eminent educationist and Professor of Chemistry Mr. BC Verma has passed away on Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment at PGI for a past few days.
Professor Verma was known as soft-spoken, erudite and humble personality and he chose to lead a simple life despite having all privileges. It is the result of his selfless services that God has elevated his son Mr. Anurag Verma to the post of Chief Secretary of Punjab.
Prof. BC Verma was born on April 2, 1934, in village Chalela in Patiala district. Since childhood, due to his passion for studies, he used to travelle 15 kilometers to Patiala city on his feet in his early life and later on a bicycle. After obtaining higher education in chemistry, he served as professor of chemistry at Government Mohindra College, Patiala.
During his teaching tenure, Verma was admired by his students. In the 1980s, when the era of tuitions was at its peak, Mr. Verma even taught the needy and talented students free of cost at home after his college. He had not only moulded the character but also proved to be real architect of many students’ future. Apart from helping his students in every way, he also had a sincere and positive attitude towards his support staff.
The students of Professor Verma rose to distinguished positions in various fields including civil and police officers, professors and doctors.
Dr. Dr Gurpreet S Wander, esteemed cardiologist, is often admire and remember teachings of Prof. Verma. In addition to teaching, Verma served as an education administrator. He was the Principal of Government College Patti and Government Sports College Jalandhar and retired as deputy director of DPI colleges.
Prof. B.C. Verma’s wife was also a teacher and one of his sons, Anurag Verma, is currently the Chief Secretary of Punjab and the other son Ashish Verma is an advocate.
