MCC honours Sanitation workers on “Safai Mitra Amrut Samman Samaroh”

Chandigarh, October 2:- The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today honoured door to door waste collectors and other sanitation workers of MCC on the occasion of “Safai Mitra Amrut Samman Samaroh” under the banner 75th Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav mega celebrations, organized at Tagore Theater, Sector 18, Chandigarh here today. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, Chandigarh was the chief guest during the programme. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MCC,  Sujoy Choudhury, Executive Director & State Head, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.,   Mahesh Inder Siddhu, Senior Deputy Mayor,  Farmila, Deputy Mayor,  Sanjay Tandon, other councilors and officers of MCC were also present during the programme.

While addressing the sanitation workers, the Mayor said that the Municipal Corporation is celebrating 75th Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav from 28th September, 2021 and this programme is also a part of the one week mega celebrations.

Remembering Mahatma Gandhi, on the occasion of “Gandhi Jayanti”, the Mayor said that the campaign for cleanliness continuously gave energy to the Nation’s freedom movement and it is a greate tribute by us to Mahatma Gandhi. The cleanliness movement has once again connected the country to the dream of a new India, he added.

He said that the sanitation workers are our cleaning army, which supports the system framed by the MCC for solid waste collection and handling. He said that segregation of waste is technically mandatory in Chandigarh, but not all households follow through. That makes the efforts of the door to door waste collectors much more important; segregate the waste that they collect into their recyclables-paper, plastics, metals, and glass or wet waste, which is taken for composting.

While speaking on the occasion, Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MCC said that in addition to that the Municipal Corporation facilitated sanitation workers deployed at toilet blocks throughout city and sewermen of public health circle by organizing area level facilitation programmes.

She said that sanitation worker’s safety is necessary for the sanitation workers and the Municipal Corporation is fully equipped with modern resources in order to protect its sanitation staff.

The Mayor and Commissioner also honoured all the teams for performing during the week long mega event of 75th Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav besides honouring its brand ambassador  Kala Ram, sanitation worker.

A Play was also staged by the artists of Parmpara group under the theme “Waste Segregation”, which dipcited the real picture of source segregation and awareness to segregate the waste separately i.e. wet waste and dry waste in different dustbins for its scientific disposal.

In addition to that a live painting workshop was also organized in the compound area of Tagore Theater under the theme sanitation and Mahatma Gandhi, which was highly appreciated by the Chief Guest and visitors.
