CHANDIGARH, June 26: Following Under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s directives in the ongoing war against drugs, Punjab Police observed the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking by destroying substantial quantities of narcotics on Wednesday. This operation involved disposing of over 83 kg of heroin, 10,000 kg of poppy husk, 100 kg of ganja, and 4.52 lakh pills/capsules at 10 different locations across the state.

Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav made a surprise visit at a drug disposal site— Punjab Chemical and Crop Protection Limited— in Dera Bassi, SAS Nagar to check the ongoing disposal of drug consignments belonging to districts including Kapurthala, SAS Nagar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Roopnagar and all STF Ranges. The DGP was accompanied by Special DGP Special Task Force (STF) Kuldeep Singh, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Rupnagar Range Nilambari Jagdale and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) SAS Nagar Dr Sandeep Garg.
626 NDPS cases are being disposed of in a transparent manner
Yadav, addressing the media, highlighted that these large drug consignments from 626 NDPS cases are being transparently disposed of across 33 Districts/Commissionerates and Units in Punjab at 10 different locations statewide.
Furthermore, he conducted a review of the ongoing drug disposal in remaining districts/units via a Webex meeting. Since the formation of the CM Bhagwant Singh Mann-led Punjab Government, Punjab Police has systematically disposed of significant quantities of narcotics. This includes 2700 kg of heroin, 3450 kg of opium, 1.77 lakh kg of Poppy Husk, 1.40 crore pills/tablets, and 2 lakh injections.

DGP urged people to “Say No to Drugs
The DGP unequivocally urged people to “Say No to Drugs” and warned against the life-threatening consequences of narcotics addiction.
He urged Punjab residents to help police by reporting drug smuggling or supply.
“Let’s unite in the fight against drugs with unwavering resolve. Let’s safeguard our youth, families, and future,” he stressed, reaffirming Punjab Police’s dedication to a drug-free Punjab.
DGP Gaurav Yadav highlighted Punjab Police’s Enforcement, Deaddiction, and Prevention (EDP) strategy, aligned with CM Bhagwant Singh Mann’s vision, to eradicate drugs from the state.

He intensified the strategy to control drug supply at the point of sale at the Mohalla and Village levels. He instructed all police officers to trace the forward and backward linkages of all cases registered under the NDPS Act and to take strict action against those found colluding with drug smugglers.
Meanwhile, following the strenuous efforts of the Punjab Police to root out drug menace from the state, Heroin recoveries have jumped 6.83 times (683%) since 2017.
