From a modest background to being a Minister in the Cabinet of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, MLA from Patiala Rural Dr Balbir Singh has covered a long journey in his political and personal life.
Born to a poor farmer in village Bhaura, near Nawanshahr, Punjab, Dr Balbir Singh fished in the troubled waters in his early life. Due to meagre resources, he acquired education largely from financial contributions by his native villagers and his teachers. From a village school with no benches and electricity, he went on to become a renowned Eye surgeon with his dedication, hard work and commitment.
A true son of the soil, Dr Balbir Singh remained firmly connected with his roots and gave up many lucrative opportunities to go abroad. Patients from entire northern region especially from states of Jammu Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab & Haryana throng to Patiala for getting treatment by Dr Balbir. A philanthropist Dr Balbir, never ran behind the money, but since last four decades has been providing low cost eye care to farmers and poor masses.
As a doctor, he had treated lakhs of patients at a very low cost and donated the gift of vision to over 30000 blind patients besides distributing free medicines to tens of thousands of patients. A recipients from many awards from state governments across the country, Dr Balbir entered politics in 2014 and played a pivotal role in victory of AAP at Patiala Lok Sabha seat. Dr Balbir organised a “free medicines and medical services langar” at Delhi borders during the farmers agitation against the draconian farm laws. Dr Balbir won the 2022 assembly election from Patiala Rural by a whopping margin of over 50000 votes and all his opponents lost their security deposit.
