Amritsar, March 16, 2021
As part of the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) campaign to take action against those who defamed the farmers’ movement, party leader Jeevan Jyot Kaur’s complaint against Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut was heard in a local court in Amritsar on Tuesday. Kangana Ranaut had made derogatory remarks against Mohinder Kaur of Bathinda district who was participating in the farmers’ agitation. The remarks made against elderly Mohinder Kaur had hurt the farmers following which the Aam Aadmi Party launched a campaign to crack down on those who made defamatory comments against the farmers. It was under this campaign that the AAP leader from Amritsar Jeevan Jyot Kaur had filed a case against Kangana Ranaut in the court through her lawyer Parminder Sethi.
After today’s proceedings, the court fixed the next hearing in the matter for May 19. Interacting with mediapersons, Jeevan Jyot Kaur said that the Aam Aadmi Party has stood by the farmers from day one. She said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government and Captain Amarinder Singh government were strangling and inhumanely treating the farmers who were struggling for their survival. She said that the AAP was fighting against the atrocities being perpetrated on the farmers by the government. She further said that the BJP leaders and Union ministers were trying to defame the farmers by calling them terrorists, separatists and Khalistanis. “On the other hand, with the connivance of the central government, Kangana Ranaut also made derogatory remarks against our esteemed mother Mohinder Kaur which hurt our sentiments,” she added.
She said that in the historic struggle being waged today, the heirs of Mai Bhago, mothers and sisters of Punjab were fighting shoulder to shoulder and they know how to fight the toughest problem. “The rhetoric of the BJP leaders or the likes of Kangana Ranaut cannot dampen the spirits,” she added. The AAP leader further said that Kangana Ranaut would be forced to apologize for the statement made against Mohinder Kaur. She said that on the one hand, the Aam Aadmi Party’s Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, impressed by the contribution of Mohinder Kaur in the farmers’ struggle despite her old age, honoured her on the occasion of Women’s Day; while on the other hand, the BJP central government and its supporters were insulting our elderly mothers.
