Chandigarh, February 2, 2021

Reacting to the use of violence by Congress ministers and leaders across the state in violating democratic values and preventing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidates from filing the nomination papers during the municipal bodies’ elections process, party’s state president and Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann said that during the Akali government the Congressmen who had been talking about democratic values and raising their voice against bullying, were now following their footsteps and looting the elections.

He said that today during the process of nominations for the municipal bodies’ elections, there were incidents of violence in various places in Punjab and the Congress workers had also stopped the Aam Aadmi Party candidates from filing the nomination papers. Mann said that the Aam Aadmi Party MLAs had reached Ferozepur and Guru Har Sahai and raised their voice against this bullying of the government.

AAP MLA Kulwant Singh Pandori raised his voice against the goons being bullied by Congress Minister Rana Sodhi in Guru Har Sahai, while MLA Kultar Singh Sandhwan raised the issue of bullying of AAP workers in Ferozepur. Mann said that in fact the Congress leaders had made huge false promises to the people of Punjab before the 2017 elections and now when they failed to fulfil them; they were fearing defeat and resorted to undemocratic manoeuvres to win this election. “The Congressmen have committed a heinous act by violating the constitution framed by Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar for which the people of the state would not forgive them,” he added.

Mann said that earlier the state police was acting like a pawn in the hands of Akalis and now it was acting on the cues of Congress leaders which was highly reprehensible. He said that the law and order situation in the state was completely destroyed and Captain Amarinder Singh was still sitting in his farmhouse, watching the assassination of democracy. “The people of Punjab would retaliate against the Congress in the upcoming elections,” added Mann. He further said that the Aam Aadmi Party was standing shoulder to shoulder with each of its workers and would ensure their safety. For this purpose, senior leader of the party and Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly Harpal Singh Cheema, will visit the sites of violence on Wednesday.
