Chief Secretary Conducts Surprise Visit to Civil Hospital Mohali

SAS Nagar/Chandigarh, February 2: Punjab Chief Secretary Anurag Verma’s surprise visit to Civil Hospital Mohali aimed to verify the implementation of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s announcement regarding free medicines for patients at Government hospitals.
Ensuring Free Medicine Distribution
Verma conversed with patients leaving the Civil Hospital, ensuring they received all prescribed medicines free of charge. Patients confirmed receiving free medicines and commended the government’s public welfare initiative.
Essential Drug List Preparation
The Health Department prepared an Essential Drug List (EDL) comprising 276 drugs, with rate contracts finalized for 90% of them, as informed by Verma.
Increased Financial Powers for Medicines
Senior Medical Officers (SMOs) were granted increased financial powers, enabling them to purchase remaining drugs from the market, with approval of Rs. 25 Cr from the Chief Minister.
Statewide Inspection Coverage
The inspection spanned across 23 District Hospitals, 41 Sub-Divisional Hospitals, and 161 Community Health Centres statewide, with Deputy Commissioners conducting inspections and addressing issues.
Patient Advocacy and Helpline
Mr. Verma emphasized the importance of patients reporting any issues with prescribed medicines to the concerned SMO or DC, or contacting Helpline No. 1100 for assistance.

The Chief Secretary was accompanied by Principal Secretary of Health Mr. Ajoy Sharma and MD of Punjab Health System Corporation Mr. Varinder Kumar Sharma during the inspection.
