9th UK National Gatka Championship in Hayes on September 2: MP Dhesi
British Girls, boys Gatka teams to showcase martial art skills
Chandigarh/UK, August 31, 2023 : Gatka Federation UK, affiliated with the World Gatka Federation, in collaboration with Gurdwara Nanaksar Garib Niwaj in Hayes, are organising the upcoming 9th UK Gatka Championship 2023 on Saturday, September 2 in the grounds of Gurdwara Nanaksar. This event will witness the participation of Gatka Akharas (Teams) from various cities and towns across Britain.
Revealing the details about the event’s preparations, Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, MP from Slough and the founder President of Gatka Federation UK for over a decade, informed that boys and girls, women’s and men’s Gatka teams will compete in various age categories during this annual national championship.
“Starting in 2013 in Gravesend, this national Gatka event has been successfully organised in previous years, at locations such as Derby (2014), Southall (2015), Smethwick (Birmingham) in 2016, Ilford (London) in 2017, Slough in 2018, Wolverhampton in 2019, and Leamington Spa in 2022,” he shared.
Dhesi expressed his excitement, stating, “I am delighted that Hayes will be hosting the national competition for the first time. This event is a wonderful opportunity for girls and boys to showcase their skills in this centuries-old Sikh martial art.”
Dhesi extended his gratitude to Gatka Federation UK secretary Herman Singh Johal, Sarbjit Singh Grewal from SafeTech Systems Ltd and the entire organising committee for extending help and their dedicated efforts in bringing this event to fruition, and encouraged UK-based teams interested in participating to reach out without any delay.
Tanmanjeet Dhesi highlighted that the championship would be a family-friendly event, free and open to all attendees. Throughout the day, langar (community kitchen food) and refreshments would be served, along with a range of other activities. “For those who wish to volunteer, or local businesses looking to sponsor, please contact us. I urge everyone to attend and extend their support for Gatka,” he added.
He further informed that in addition to the esteemed presence of Sant Baba Amar Singh Ji Burundi Nanaksar waley, chief Gurdwara Nanaksar Garib Niwaj, large number of personalities from Britain and India, including Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal MP, Harjeet Singh Grewal, president National Gatka Association of India, would grace the occasion.
