Walkathon Raises Head Injury Awareness at PGIMER, Chandigarh
The Division of Neuroanaesthesia and Neurocritical care at PGIMER, Chandigarh organized a Walkathon on March 24, 2024, to raise awareness about Head Injury, its Prevention, and the importance of Primary Care. At Sukhna Lake, 70-80 doctors, including Prof. Y Narayana, Head of the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care, and senior faculty members, actively participated and advocated for the prevention of head injuries throughout the walk.
Aimed to educate the general public about the early signs
“The Walkathon aimed to raise awareness about head injury signs and symptoms, emphasizing the need for prompt hospital transfer, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. Additionally, emphasis was placed on helmet use for both drivers and passengers. Furthermore, resident doctors performed a skit at Sukhna Lake, illustrating scenarios of head injuries, reinforcing the importance of timely medical care. Approximately 100 attendees supported the cause enthusiastically.”
India is facing an increasing burden of Head Injuries
In India, Head Injuries are on the rise, particularly among the younger population, predominantly males, during evening and night hours (approximately 66%). The most vulnerable groups are pedestrians (26%), two-wheeler riders (31%), pillions (12%), and bicyclists (8%). Contributing factors include not wearing helmets, driving under the influence, over-speeding, and reckless overtaking. Consequently, Head Injury stands as one of India’s primary causes of death and disability.
Prof Nidhi Panda Stresses Awareness at PGIMER Event
Prof. Nidhi Panda, Head of Neuroanaesthesia and Neurocritical Care, stressed the importance of Head Injury awareness, stating, “March 20th is World Awareness Day each year.” She emphasised the urgency of raising awareness about Head Injury, its symptoms, and the crucial need for immediate assistance during the Golden Hour. “This Walkathon aims to address these concerns, and I hope this message resonates widely.”
