PGIMER holds a Workshop on Neonatal Airway Management
Newborns are the most vulnerable group of patients. Some of them may require cardio-respiratory support soon after birth or in the early period of their life. They may have birth defects which require immediate surgery. Prof RK Ratho, Dean Academics, and President of Neonatal Anaesthesia Society Prof Usha Saha inaugurated a one day workshop on “Neonatal Airway Management ” in PGIMER, Chandigarh on 21st July, 2024.
Experts from the field of Paediatric Anaesthesia, Neonatology, Surgery, Anatomy and ENT discussed the challenges faced in the preoperative management and how to troubleshoot these problems.
There were 40 delegates who learned how the neonatal airway is different and challenging on dissected foetal specimens . They practised use of basic and advanced airway management devices on manikins.
“We also set up a preoperative neonatal simulation station to improve the interdisciplinary handover of neonates and enhance the communication skills of the participants.”. Organizing Chairperson Prof Indu Sen said learning in a controlled environment will improve competency of the participants when they actually manage these patients. “She further added that the government’s introduction of the JSSK program has led the institute to perform more complex neonatal surgeries.”
Dr Usha Saha shared that there is a need to reduce preoperative neonatal morbidity and mortality in India. Dr Ratho added that more such events should be held to improve skills and competency. Organising secretary , Dr Anudeep Jafra discussed the utility of point of care ultrasound at various stages of management Other highlights of the program was a quiz competition.
