Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann hikes Sarpanch honorarium to Rs2000 and announces ₹1 lakh grant for drug-free villages. Major crackdown on drug smuggling, support for rural development.
Chandigarh, April 24: In a major boost to grassroots governance, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced a historic increase in the monthly honorarium for Sarpanch to ₹2000—marking the highest-ever amount awarded in the state’s history. This announcement came during the state-level celebration of Panchayat Diwas.
Support for Drug-Free Villages in Punjab
As part of the ‘Yudh Nasheyan Virudh’ campaign against drug abuse, the Chief Minister also declared financial assistance of ₹1 lakh and modern facilities for villages that declare themselves drug-free. These villages will be developed as model villages under a special government initiative.
“We will leave no stone unturned to eradicate the drug menace. The villages taking a stand against drugs will receive full support and development aid from the government,” said CM Mann.
Sarpanch : Major Crackdown on Drug Trafficking
CM Mann highlighted the state’s aggressive measures against drug smugglers, stating that many top offenders are behind bars and their illegally acquired properties are being confiscated. This action, he said, sends a strong deterrent to others involved in such crimes.
Sarpanch : Empowering Panchayats: Pillars of Rural Democracy
In a significant policy shift, Mann confirmed that the honorarium of ₹2000 per month would be effective from the day Sarpanches were elected, replacing the unfulfilled ₹1200 promise by previous governments. He emphasized the vital role of Panchayats in implementing government schemes at the grassroots level.
“Panchayats are the foundation of democracy. Sarpanches are the eyes and ears of the government in villages,” the Chief Minister added.
Push for Unity and Development in Rural Areas
Addressing village groupism, Mann urged elected leaders to rise above divisions and serve all villagers equally. He commended Panchayats elected unanimously, calling them examples of unity, harmony, and progress.
Water Conservation and Environmental Efforts
The CM also announced the rejuvenation of village ponds, stating the treated water would be reused for agriculture to ease pressure on underground water. He noted that canal water usage for irrigation in Punjab has risen from 21% to 75% under his government. This change has significantly improved soil fertility. It has also reduced power demand.
Recognition of Outstanding Villages
The Panchayat Advance Index Award was awarded to Gram Panchayat Baloh (District Bathinda) for its achievements in rural development. Several other Panchayats and Self Help Groups were also honored for exceptional performance.
