Chandigarh, August 25 – The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today passed a resolution appealing to the United States government to take a humanitarian view of truck driver Harjinder Singh case even as it appealed to the union government to extend consular and legal assistance to the Sikh youth and ensure he has access to legal remedies.
The resolution was passed during a meeting of the senior leadership from six districts of the State under the chairmanship of party president Sukhbir Singh Badal.
The meeting also decided to conduct a historic political conference at Moga on August 31 which has been designated as a Fateh rally to lay out the party programme to take on centrist parties which have ruined Punjab. Leaders assured the SAD president that more than two lakh Punjabis would congregate at the party conference to sound the bugle for the end of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) rule in Punjab and the advent of the SAD government in 2027.

He is also part of the Sikh diaspora. Singh stated that Harjinder deserved a fair trial after an accident caused a fatal crash. Mr Badal said Punjabis were deeply hurt. They were upset to learn that Harjinder was produced in court without a turban. A turban is an inseparable and sacred article of faith for every Sikh. “This insensitive act has pained the Sikh community worldwide”, he asserted.
The resolution expressed the party’s heartfelt sympathies with the families who lost their loved ones in the accident. It urged the United States government to take a humanitarian view of the entire issue. This perspective should keep in mind Harjinder’s background, circumstances, and the contribution of the Punjabi community.

The Ministry of External Affairs was asked to ensure support for Harjinder. All legal defense avenues should be available through the Indian Embassy and Consulate. It also urged the Punjab government to stand in solidarity with Harjinder’s family. They should extend appropriate support to it. The resolution appealed to the Sikh and Punjabi diaspora organizations in North America. They are asked to provide moral support to Harjinder. They should also offer financial and legal assistance during this difficult period.
