Vigilance Bureau apprehends ASI taking Rs 3,000 bribe

Chandigarh, August 24,  The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) during its ongoing drive against corruption in the state, has arrested ASI Tara Singh, posted at police station Dialpura, camp at Bhagta Bhaika, in Bathinda district, red handed while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000.

The VB spokesperson disclosed today that they arrested the accused ASI based on the statement and recorded evidence presented by the complainant, Manpreet Singh, a resident of Aklia Jalal village in Rampura Phul tehsil of Bathinda.

The spokesperson further added that the complainant approached the VB, reporting that he had lodged a complaint against his tractor driver at the police station after a minor road accident with a biker. Although they resolved the matter amicably, the police detained his tractor. When the complainant visited the police station to retrieve it, ASI Tara Singh demanded Rs 10,000, which they negotiated down to Rs 8,000. The complainant recorded this demand on his mobile and handed it over to the VB as evidence.

          The spokesperson stated that acting on this complaint, a team from VB, Bathinda range, laid a trap and caught ASI Tara Singh red-handed, accepting Rs 3,000 bribe from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses.

He said that the police have registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act against the accused ASI at VB Police Station, Bathinda Range, and further investigation into the case is in progress.
