Governor inaugurates campaign to celebrate Silver Jubilee Anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas

Plantation drive undertaken as a part of a series to commemorate 25th Anniversary of Kargil War

Chandigarh, July 15: The Punjab Governor and Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh,  Banwari Lal Purohit on the occasion of Silver Jubilee Anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas planted a sapling at the Punjab Raj Bhawan here today.

Speaking on the sidelines of the function, the Punjab Governor said that this campaign will also give a boost to the ongoing tree plantation campaign ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ (one tree for mother) launched by the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.

Chandigarh Chapter, has brought soil for planting trees

The Jammu Kashmir Study Centre (JKSC), Chandigarh Chapter, has brought soil for planting trees, especially from Bajrang Post, the starting point of the Kargil War. In May 1999, Pak Rangers captured Capt Saurabh Kalia Ji and his soldiers from the Jat Regiment at this place, and they attained martyrdom while attempting to retake the post.

The Governor also emphasized the valour of the Indian armed forces in maintaining the unity and integrity of our Country. He called on the residents to promote such activities which would help not only in preserving the environment but also in creating awareness about the valour and supreme sacrifice by the Indian armed forces.

next two weeks to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas

The Jammu Kashmir Study Centre, Chandigarh Chapter, initiated this plantation drive as part of a series of activities planned for the next two weeks to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Kargil War.

Government schools and colleges in U.T., Chandigarh, will conduct the first tree plantation drive in the series of events.

On the occasion, Vivek Chauhan, President of JKSC Chandigarh, and Simrit Kahlon, Secretary of JKSC Chandigarh, briefed attendees about the activities JKSC will conduct over the next fortnight and thanked the Governor and guests for their participation in the initiative.

Prominent amongst others present on the occasion included Prof. Renu Vig, Prof. Shivani Sharma, Deepak Batra, Chetan Mittal, Devinder Thakur, Vijay Vaishnavi, Jai Kumar,  Jaswinder and  Rakesh Sharma.
