INNOVATIVE MECHANICAL THROMBECTOMY WITH NEW DEVICE SAVES PATIENT’S LIFE
NEW DEVICE FIRST TIME USED IN PGIMER, CHANDIGARH
The Patients who present with acute myocardial infarction can have heavy thrombus burden which can be life threatening and can lead to less than optimal outcomes despite traditional coronary angioplasty and stenting. In response to the challenge, extensive research has been conducted to develop new devices specifically designed to treat patients with this kind of heavy thrombus burden after acute myocardial infarction. Recently a mechanical thrombus aspiration system (Penumbra CAT Rx) has been launched in India to do mechanical (Machine based) thrombus aspiration in such patients.
In a first case in PGIMER a team of doctors at Advanced Cardiac Centre(ACC) led by Dr Himanshu Gupta, Associate Professor used this mechanical thrombus aspiration device in a 60-year-old male who had presented with Acute Anterior wall MI and had 100% thrombotic occlusion of ostial LAD artery. This condition posed significant challenges , as heavy thrombus burden at this location can migrate to nearby artery which can be life threatening. Recognizing this problem, the team of doctors at ACC used the new Penumbra CAT Rx catheter and performed thrombus aspiration for two runs of 30 seconds each, successfully removing the thrombus completely and restored flow in the vessels. Following thrombus aspiration successful IVUS guided stenting was done at the ostial LAD with good results and no thrombus migration or flow disturbance in the vessel.
Dr. Gupta explained that previously we only had manual thrombus aspiration devices which were not very effective however this new device is much more effective and efficient to remove large and even organized thrombus from the vessels. Dr Himanshu expressed profound satisfaction with the procedure’s outcome, stating, “The successful use of the Penumbra CAT Rx system in this case marks a significant advancement in our approach to treating severe arterial blockages in Acute MI patients. The technology’s precision and efficacy are truly remarkable”. This device will be really useful for management of acute MI patients especially in peripheral hospitals which manage acute emergencies of such patients.
