Chandigarh April 3: The Haryana Government is taking a significant step ahead. They are fulfilling the commitment outlined in the BJP’s Sankalp Patra. This commitment is to set up 600 subsidized food canteens in the state. The government has decided to launch 200 new Atal Shramik Kisan Canteens by August this year. This is as part of the first phase. Haryana Chief Minister Sh. Nayab Singh Saini will inaugurate these canteens on the occasion of Independence Day on August 15, 2025.
The Chief Minister, Nayab Singh Saini, chaired the meeting today and made a decision.In the Atal Shramik Kisan Canteens, farmers and labourers will receive fresh and hygienic food. They offer the food at a subsidized rate of only Rs 10 per Thali.
SHG-Run Canteens Empower Women with Subsidized Meals
The Chief Minister stated that currently, 175 subsidized food canteens are operational at various locations throughout the state. This includes 115 from the Labour Department, 53 from the Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board (HSAMB), and 7 from Sugar Mills. Members of Women Self Help Groups (SHGs) manage these canteens, thereby promoting women’s empowerment. With the establishment of 200 new Atal Shramik Kisan Canteens, the total will rise to 375. He directed officials to start identifying locations for these canteens at the earliest. He added that they have set a target to open 600 such canteens across the state in a phased manner.
Kisan Canteens : CSR Funds May Support HSIIDC Canteen Infrastructure
Sh. Nayab Singh Saini directed the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) to establish subsidized food canteens. These canteens will be in all its Industrial Estates across the state. This is to ensure that laborers have access to nutritious food at affordable rates. The Chief Minister also proposed developing the infrastructure for these canteens through the corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives of companies. He said that several large companies have expressed interest in contributing to this initiative. He also instructed the Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board (HSAMB) and the Labour Department. They need to identify additional locations in mandis. They should also look at construction sites for the establishment of these canteens. This effort includes expanding their scope. Furthermore, he suggested opening Atal Shramik Kisan Canteens to support laborers and workers at mining sites.
Establish a dedicated portal for the subsidized food canteens operating in the state
The Chief Minister instructed the establishment of a dedicated portal for the subsidized food canteens operating in the state. This will ensure that people can access information about these canteens with the click of a button. He said they should enable QR code payments at these canteens to promote digitization.
All subsidized food canteens must adopt a uniform menu of food items.
Nayab Singh Saini directed officials to adopt a uniform menu for all subsidized food canteens across the state. He instructed the Haryana State Rural Livelihood Mission (HSRLM) to prepare a standardized menu. This menu should also include food items made from millets. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of offering breakfast at these canteens. He suggested serving South Indian dishes, such as idli and dosa, to laborers and farmers.
