In the wake of Unprecedented Rainfall in the region, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh leaves no stone unturned: Deploys huge manpower and machinery.

Chandigarh, July 9, 2023: Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh reviewed the situation in the city today as unprecedented rainfall has battered the region over the past 24 hours. According to the latest weather forecast, the city is likely to receive continuous rainfall for the next five days.

Chandigarh on Sunday marked the wettest day in 70 years as the city received a record 325.5 mm rainfall between 8:30 am on Saturday and 8:30 am on Sunday, officials at India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. This has broken the all-time record for the highest amount of rainfall in 24 hours in July.

For the safety and well-being of the citizens, the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh has set up 24*7 Emergency Control Rooms at three strategic locations in the city – Sector 15, Manimajra, and Sector 17- ICCC. , respectively. Officers visited the control rooms and also pushed the fire and rescue services into action.

The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh has also formed 18 Quick Response Teams (QRTs) to address issues of waterlogging, fallen trees, disruption of drinking water supply, electrocution, and other emergencies. These teams are well-equipped to handle any kind of emergency situation that may arise due to the heavy rainfall.

The Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, Ms. Anindita Mitra, visited the affected areas along with other officials to assess the situation and the progress made by the on-field staff in restoring normalcy. During her visit to Khudda Lahora and Daddumajra, she took the time to listen to citizens and assured them of the corporation’s full support and timely assistance. Huge water logging was seen in Khudda Lahora and machinery deployed. In Daddumajra, suction tankers were deployed to prevent Lechate from flowing onto the roads.

An advisory has been issued to the citizens of Chandigarh, urging them to stay indoors and avoid going out unless it is absolutely necessary. The advisory also includes instructions on what to do in case of an emergency and how to stay safe during heavy rainfall.

Due to inclement weather conditions predicted by the Meteorological Department, the following advisory is hereby issued in the overall interest of safety and security of public property and life of all the residents/visitors to City Beautiful.

– Do not park vehicles under heavy trees during bad weather conditions.

– Stay away from over matured/overgrown/old and aged trees during rainy or stormy weather.

– Avoid travelling/pedestrian movement on the roads bordered by trees during heavy rain or storm.

– Do not touch electrical/street light/park light poles to avoid any electrocution or untoward incident.

Several roads have caved in, pipelines have burst, and sewer systems has collapsed in places. The Municipal corporation is working relentlessly to restore the damaged infrastructure and ensure that the citizens of Chandigarh can travel safely.
