The recent devastating floods in Punjab caused massive losses to the state’s food providers. Crops spread across nearly 5 lakh acres of farmland were completely destroyed, pushing farmers into a deep financial crisis. In this difficult time, the Punjab Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has stepped forward as a major support for the farmers. The government has announced that free wheat seeds will be provided for the 5 lakh acres of damaged farmland.
CM Mann declared that farmers will be given two lakh quintals of wheat seeds worth about ₹74 crore. The entire cost will be borne by the Punjab Government itself. This is not just aid, but a firm step towards rebuilding farmers’ lives and sowing new hope in their fields.
Wheat Seeds ; CM Announces Relief Measures for Flood-Affected Farmers
CM Mann said, “In this difficult time, our government stands shoulder to shoulder with the farmers. Punjab’s hardworking farmers made the country self-reliant in food grains, and now this initiative is to give new strength to their hard work.”
Through a post on his social media account ‘X,’ CM Mann also mentioned that due to the floods, 5 lakh acres of crops have been ruined and farmers are not in a position to purchase seeds. Therefore, the government has decided to provide seeds free of cost so that farmers can start cultivation again and stand on their own feet.
The Chief Minister further shared that more than 2,300 villages in the state have been affected by the floods. These floods have disrupted the lives of nearly 20 lakh people. Sadly, 56 lives were lost and about 7 lakh people were rendered homeless. In addition, 3,200 schools, 19 colleges, and 1,400 clinics and hospitals were damaged. Around 8,500 kilometers of roads were destroyed and 2,500 bridges were washed away. The total estimated loss is about ₹13,800 crore, but the real figure may be even higher.
Amidst such massive losses, the Mann Government’s ₹74 crore relief package provides a fresh start for farmers. The free seed scheme is especially beneficial during the Rabi season. This relief is not just about giving seeds. It is a promise. Whenever a crisis arises, the government will not leave farmers alone.
