Inline with events being organized to celebrate 550th Gurpurab of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, water conservation awareness Marathon was organised by the School Education Department Punjab.
The Mega event was marked by the presence of Education Minister, Vijay Inder Singla, who along with 3,000 students from government schools and officials from education Department including Secretary Education Krishna Kumar, DPI Inderjit Singh and District Education Officers, Secondary and Elementary Education of Patiala participated in the Marathon.
Addressing the students and teachers before giving a green signal to the marathon, the Education Minister said that State government is organising a series of events to mark the 550th Gurpurab of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. As a part of the celebrations, the State School Education Department organized a water conservation awareness fortnight beginning from August 1 with the Marathon on August 14 being the final event. The fortnight long celebrations included Essay competitions , Tree Plantation ,Quiz Competitions, One Act Plays, Slogan Writing, Group Discussions, Chart making and Objective Questions Rounds on water conservation, organised in all the Middle, Secondary and High Secondary Schools of the State.
He said that the water crisis is a serious problem for the Nation including Punjab. The precious natural resource can only be saved if our students, who are our legatees, be roped in as the guardians of this valuable resource. Sensitivity towards environment and natural resources needs to be imbibed into them in early years of life, said Singla.
Education Minister urged the students to plant more trees and check the reckless use of water. He appreciated the department’s seriousness on the issue and directed that the awareness fortnight be extended till August 31 thereby making it an awareness month with opening up the participation into the events to the parents of the students.
The marathon started from Government Smart Senior Secondary School Civil Lines, Patiala, at around 6:30 am and passing through various prominent areas of the city, it culminated at Multipurpose Senior Secondary School.
Felicitating the winners of the Marathon, Education Minister informed that all the winners of various competitions would be honoured by Captain Amrinder Singh, Chief Minister, Punjab.
