Chandigarh/02 October/Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president S. Sukhbir Singh Badal today congratulated Punjabi-origin Canadian leader Jagmeet Singh for being elected as the new leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP).

In a statement here, the SAD president said Jagmeet Singh had not only created history by heading a political party in a country seven seas across his homeland, but also by clinching this coveted post of NDP leader in the first round of voting by a huge margin. “He has won 53.6 percent votes, leaving his rivals much behind in the competition. With this historical victory, he has become the first visible minority leader to head a major federal party in Canada,” he added.

Terming it a victory for Sikhs across the world who firmly believes in values of brotherhood, equality and diversity, S. Badal said being a lawyer and a provincial legislator, Jagmeet Singh has been upholding all these values in his personal as well as professional life. “He jumped into the world of politics to make a positive change in the life of a vast majority of people. This thumping mandate shows that the people of Canada have showered him with love and trust to lead their nation in the future,” he added.

The SAD president said Sikhs and Punjabis had achieved great success in the political landscape of Canada. He said currently there were four Sikh ministers, Harjit Sajjan, Navdeep Bains, Bardish Chagger and Amarjeet Sohi in the Canadian cabinet. “Jagmeet Singh’s success has set the clock racing for the day when a Sikh will be seen addressing the people as the Prime Minister of Canada,” he added.
