Chandigarh May 8 – The Shiromani Akali Dal said today welcomed the Punjab government decision to put on hold the publication of the controversial history book for class 12 in its present form and to set up an expert   Committee of eminent historians to review the  contents of the said book.

In a statement here,  Dr Daljeet Singh Cheema , Senior Vice President of the SAD, thanked the Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh for these decisions.

He, however, urged the CM  to simultaneously restore all the 23 chapters on Punjab and  Sikh history in the Class 12 book and resume their teaching so that students did not suffer any loss in the academic session.

The party also thanked everyone, including academicians,  school and college teachers, university professors, intellectuals, the media and religious, cultural ,literary, social and students organizations who lent their voice to the cause of restoring the Punjab  history  , including the history of Guru Sahiban and heroes and martyrs,  in the class 12 syllabus.

Dr Cheema said that the stand of his party on the issue had been fully  vindicated.

Describing the government steps announced today as “ a correct though belated initiative in the right direction”, Dr Cheema said,” These are precisely the steps which the former Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Parkash Singh Badal had urged the CM Captain Amarinder Singh to take.  Had the Government listened to him then, the entire unsavoury controversy could have been avoided,” said Dr  Cheema
“Nevertheless, we are happy that the government has finally done the correct thing. We also welcome the inclusion of eminent and respected historians in the committee and we trust them to undo the injustice done to our great and glorious history,” said Dr Cheema in his statement.

Following the state government’s decision to set up the review committee and stop the publication of the book for class 12 in its present form,  the SAD has deferred “the full-fledged party meeting on the subject which was scheduled to be held in Sri Amritsar Sahib on May 11.
“We just wanted the injustice done to the great Sikh history to be vacated. We have gone strictly on academic merit and even today, we stick to the principled path of reason to get the injustice undone. We do not believe in needless confrontation. Now that the government has accepted our plea and ordered a review committee, we have decided to indefinitely postpone the party meeting at Amritsar Sahib,” said Dr Cheema.
