Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution interacted with media today at Chandigarh

Ram Vilas Paswan, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India interacted with media today at Chandigarh. While interacting with media, the Minister said that State of Punjab and Haryana procured 127 lakh metric tone (LMT) and 87 LMT Wheat respectively during Rabi Marketing Season (RMS) 2017-18 against the production of 166 and 117 LMT of Wheat.
While elaborating the procurement of paddy, Shri Paswan said that during Kharif Marketing Season 2017-18, State of Punjab and Haryana procured 176 and 59 LMT Paddy against the production of 201 and 67 LMT. Punjab and Haryana procured 118 and 40 LMT Rice against this procurement of Paddy. In the ensuing KMS 2018-19, it is estimated to procure 172 and 60 LMT against which 115 and 41 LMT Rice would be received by Punjab and Haryana FCI regions, respectively.
The Minister further said that at present, 4 LMT Silos are under construction in Punjab by FCI. In order to further augment the Storage Capacities in Punjab and Haryana 21 and 9.5 LMT of Silos are being proposed for construction in both the States. FCI and State Govt. of Punjab would construct 10.5 LMT each. In the State of Haryana 3 LMT would be constructed by FCI and 6 LMT be constructed by Govt. of Haryana.
The Minister also apprised that in Punjab State, 44% of Urban and 54% of Rural whereas in Haryana State, 29% of Urban and 71% of Rural population are covered under PDS beneficiaries.Total Number of Ration Card Holder in Punjab and Haryana is 35.26 lacs and 26.50 lacs respectively. The efficiency of Food procuring agencies has increased over the year thereby improving the management of food grains.
